Dr. Gallagher’s Dental Assistant Says People Skills are Important

My work is as a certified dental assistant and I have expanded function dental auxiliary duties as well. In this capacity I have an opportunity to get to know patients well, which I love to do. It is a pleasure and a privilege to learn about their families. Making people happy is another reason I love my job here at West Park Dental.

When we have a large, complex case it is a thrill to see the patient’s before and after reactions. For example, when we place veneers, we might be reconstructing a patient’s front teeth. This procedure has an amazing effect on self-confidence when a person smiles. The procedure involves changing the shape and color of teeth, which ultimately makes the patient look more youthful because teeth with veneers are brighter while looking absolutely natural.

My chairside work is also very satisfying. We hand the patient the mirror and see their reaction, we have the experience of showing them the before and after images side by side. Aside from being surprised by the results, the patient’s quality of life changes at that moment. It is not unusual for the patient and staff to shed a tear of happiness at the improved lifestyle the patient will have with their new smile.

To help patients understand why they should not put off dental treatment we show them images of dental cases the doctors have done in the past with excellent outcomes. We also do not want people to put off treatment due to fear of the dentist. I have been told by many patients that I have a very calming chairside effect on them—which I think comes across because I am a mom. I tend to assure patients that the doctors are very gentle and will make sure that they are comfortable. I help keep their mind off of what is happening at the moment and then celebrate the great results with them when all is done.
